About Me I am an intellectual property litigator at Callahan & Blaine in Orange County. The firm is widely recognized as one of California’s premier litigation firms, and regularly takes complex business disputes to trial in state and federal courts. Among its many other accomplishments, the firm is credited with having won the highest jury verdict in Orange County history ($934 million).
My practice has evolved significantly since my graduation from Northwestern in 1995. While my initial focus was on bank fraud and tax fraud in federal court, over the years that has broadened to encompass fraud in all its aspects, as well as trade secret misappropriation and disputes between companies regarding copyright, trademark and patent ownership. In the past decade, I have been involved in a series of intellectual property cases involving theft of trade secrets, parody as a defense to copyright infringement, and a novel application of the the unfair competition laws to internet search engine optimization.
My practice is not limited to fraud or intellectual property disputes, however, but involves a number of different areas of law. For example, for ten years I was deeply involved in a toxic tort case which I tried (and won) twice, and which we prevailed on in appeal for the second time. Another example — several years ago I defended a hedge fund and its principal in a self-dealing case brought by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which was settled on terms favorable to my clients. Currently, I am defending a series of class action lawsuits involving allegations of false advertising and unfair competition. So while this particular blog is dedicated to intellectual property, other unrelated topics may appear on these pages from time to time, since in law — as in life — variety is the cure for monotony.
